The Village of Elsah Museum announces that the 2017 Annual Photography Exhibit will be held from Saturday, April 3, to Sunday, August 6, 2017. This year's exhibit is entitled “A Village for All Seasons” and will be held in the Museum building, known as the Village Hall, at 26 LaSalle Street. Photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to make submissions to the exhibit and participate in the purchase prize portion of the exhibit. As in previous years, the photographers may sell their displayed photographs to the public retaining all proceeds. The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate and foster an appreciation of the beauty and unique qualities of Elsah and the immediate area in every season. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, April 1, 1017 during which the winners will be announced.

Rules and Photographer Recognition:

In order to recognize places of interest in Elsah and immediate areas, all photographs must be taken in the Elsah valley area, on the bluffs on either side of Elsah, in New Piasa Chautauqua, on the Principia College campus, the Eliestoun estate property or other familiar locations close to these geographic areas
. The Principia College property is private property. Permission from The Principia is required to take photographs on the campus. Photographers who receive such permission are requested to show professional courtesy in following the rules provided to them by The Principia. Unlimited and extended access is not generally provided. Chautauqua is also private property and permission is required to enter the property. In order to encourage an appreciation of the beauty of the entire area, both within and in the immediate area of the corporate limits of the Village, two first-place purchase prizes will be offered based on location.

The first place prizes are purchase prizes.
The Village of Elsah will contribute the purchase prize for the photograph in the Valley area. will donate the second purchase prize for a photograph in the surrounding area. Additionally, the Green Tree Inn will donate a one night stay for two to the winner of the Village of Elsah Valley purchase prize winner. The purchase will include a signed permission to use the photograph in publicity for the 2017 and 2018 exhibits as well as printed material generated as a result of the current or next year’s exhibit. Also, there will be certificates to recognize additional works. Those receiving certificates will receive a discount from Burton Art Services for one framed image.

The winners will be chosen by our judge,
Erica Popp, professional artist and adjunct professor of photography at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.

Works submitted for the purchase prize will be judged on the following criteria:

O Expression of the theme, “A Village for All Seasons”

O Quality of the photographic composition and

O Quality of the photographic reproduction.

All photographs submitted (silver gelatin, color, digitally or photographically produced) must be:

O at least, 6 X 8 print size and

O matted (mat not to exceed 16 X 20) and

O matted with a white mat; and protected (mat not to exceed 16 X 20 inches) if without a frame and glazing.

Each photographer may submit up to three matted prints for the Exhibit. Photographs may also be submitted for the exhibition only, not participating in the purchase prize activity. Please include the words, “Exhibition only” with the photograph label. Exhibition only photographs must still meet the criteria for being judged to be included in the exhibit and are included in the count of number of submissions.

Photographers are responsible for picking up their unsold photographs after the exhibit closes. Those not picked up by September 30, 2017 will become the property of the Village of Elsah and may be sold with the Village retaining all proceeds. Personal Delivery of Photographs: Museum open hours are Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, 2017 from 1 to 4 pm or by appointment.

Presentation requirements:
All photographs should include a removable, temporary label on the front giving the title of the work. The back label must include the name, address, phone and email of the photographer as well as the price of the photograph. It is helpful to also include information on the photograph, it size, how it was produced and any special features about the quality of the reproduction and framing.

Photographers are encouraged to consider submitting small size prints with small frames. Smaller images are more likely to be purchased. It is highly recommended, but not required, that the matted print be framed. The Museum will not be responsible for damage to photographs without a frame and plexi glazing. All framed photographs must have a wire firmly attached to the back for hanging. Matted prints often are attached with a double sided tape to the exhibit wall or tacked at the corners of the mat or into the covering over the mat.
